Proposed Ideas and Attempts for the New Magical Project!
« on: April 23, 2019, 02:40:54 am »
In here all the various ideas, experiments and proposals will be written down, whether they succeeded or failed. In the end, everything will be examined and decided upon by a council of royal advisors and the Emperor and Empress themselves, to decide what will be used as a power generator that can supply important devices all over the main island.

Failed Attempts so far:

Using stable Void Rifts to draw in Void matter to power/charge up a distributor crystal... failed because of instability and the amount of safety issues it posed to land and people.

Proposed ideas currently in testing:

Localized Lightning generator, charging the air until it creates a lightning that is caught by special lightning rods feeding into a storage crystal. Currently tested at the desert testing grounds.

Proposed Method: Localized Lightning Generator

Proposer/Inventor: Daliyah

Description of Method: Focused beam of magical particles targeting a spot in the air, charging it up slowly until a lightning is generated that is then caught by copper orbs mounted to crystal tubes feeding back the energy of the lightning into a collector crystal, which then would distribute it all over the island to the receptor stations/devices that need the energy. This is just about the power generation, not the way of transmitting it over the air to the desired destination (that is another part of the whole project). The focused beam would be generated by a magical device with a foci crystal, that would also be powered by the energy won by the lightning strikes.

Drawbacks: Not the safest method since lightning could arc out. No fly zone would be needed over the city then. The ratio between magic spent to create that charged beam and the energy won by catching the lightnings could be better.

Proposed Method: Lodestone-based Mana Charging

Proposer/Inventory: Saa of Kun Qalasi

Description of method: By using a specialized Tass crystal embedded in a small lodestone, generate magical power through the rapid transmission of the lodestone through ambient mana ('mana friction') in order to gain and maintain power. The frame is constructed in stone, with two separate lodestone columns of different alignments on each side. A couple of inches away from both columns, a pair of crystals are embedded that changes the crystalline lodestone's affinity, causing it to stop abruptly and be drawn toward the other column.
Same change of affinity happens there.
Another crystal is embedded in the middle of the path whereupon the lodestone discharges its magical energy stores, allowing that energy to be moved to a separate, more permanent container.
Expected result: The small lodestone travels between each column at blazing speeds, absorbing ambient mana, without ever touching any of the sides, and then releasing that mana into a storage container for use.

Benefits of method: Zero-maintenance. When the process begins, it continues forever (theoretically) unless tampered with, generates no heat beyond the initial burst when the process is started and the generator is sealed airtight, and can accrue large amounts of energy extremely quickly due to the speed at which the collection lodestone travels. It is also a self-contained solution that requires no external investment beyond the crystal embeds.

Drawbacks: Collection lodestone will fly between both lodestone columns at ridiculous speeds, and therefore it has incredible destructive potential. As a result, once the generator is active, it cannot be disabled again. The setup is very susceptible to design flaws and needs to be perfect out of the gate. The frame has to be assembled on-site and the generator cannot be moved once it is assembled and activated.

Saa would note that if there is no container to collect the gathered mana, the design would simply eject it back into ambience, adding that it is probably unwise for non-mages to stand next to the external mana-conductor, but besides that, this method poses no risk if it is applied correctly.

Visuals of the frame demonstration (that Saa notes will be completely sealed in its final implementation):

Proposed Method: Storing lightning from natural storms

Proposer/Inventor: Bellatrix Valiant and Vheljen Valentine

Description of Method: This could be a modification or addition to the lightning generator. Natural storms produce some of the most powerful lightning strikes. With the proper rods to catch them, I would be able to channel the energy into the devices to store it and use glass to contain it. Once the lightning is stored, it can power the barrier for a very long time. Bellatrix can divert lightning strikes if needed. This could also be a standalone project ((I like this since it wont require us to push the technological limitations of Lismore so far.))

Drawbacks: would need storms to occur, even weaker ones. Strong lightning strikes can overwhelm most storage methods even though with some work, storage can be maintained.

Visuals of the proposed method/device: (no visuals)

Testing: The rods were placed through jar like glass containers of varying thickness and crystals were placed within the glass containers. First container held at around 25% of my own lightning spell but broke at around 60%, second held at a bit higher, but I overcharged the crystal, Third held both in the crystal and the container  at 100% of my power but the weather has not provided a chance to test for natural lightning.

The first 3 for testing in a thunderstorm yielded 2 overloaded crystals which exploded, but the last one I was able to get the parameters right to contain a single lightning bolt, though that required a very strong crystal and a much larger glass containment. I was finally able to contain a natural lightning strike after many trials.

Proposed Method: Leyline Relocation

Proposer/Inventor: Familiar Antaeus

Description of Method: Using powerful magic and a large lodestone as an anchor, one of the current leylines in Lismore could be shifted to bend to the generator. Once located there, current leyline charging technologies could be used to pull power from the line to send to the various devices that will need it.

Benefits of Method: This would be completely safe to approach for even common citizens, and provide a consistent amount of power.

Drawbacks: The amount of power needed to pull the leyline into place would require many spellcasters working in unison, and may temporarily disrupt magic casting on the island. It's also not as high a power yield as the other methods unless two lines are pulled into an intersection, requiring double the effort. It has not been tested yet.
