Manabeasts 101
« on: January 18, 2012, 10:49:58 pm »
This is a collection of accounts on manabeasts, creatures made of living mana (aer).
The information below is considered factual in the RP, first described by Erick Mousehold and Caex Silverfall's characters. Other Lismore Lands Staff Members knowledgeable in this matter are welcome to add to the information here.
Characters researching on this subject can use this information as official canon information in the RP.

MANABEASTS

Manabeasts are living creatures (people or animals) whose living tissues (flesh, organs, blood, etc) undergo a transformation from organic matter into aer, which is mana in its biological form.
There are two ways a creature of flesh and blood can turn into a manabeasts:

  • Surviving Mana Corruption

  • Spell Scar Survivors

Mana Corruption Survivor Manabeast:

Mana corruption is an accute poisoning caused by any type of mana onto a living organism. Normally, mana corruption is fatal. The poisoning changes the living creature's organic matter into aer. 90% of the time, the aer will form crystaline growths throughout the body of the poisoned creature. Death is almost certain due to the incompatibility between aer and organic matter. Life expectancy for someone affected by mana poisoning varies from individual to individual, but an agonizing death is the most likely outcome.
In the rare occasions where the poisoned creature survives the mana poisoning, the entirety of the victim's body will have been turned into aer.
A manabeast is a complete transformation from the creature's original form. It's likely that once turned into a manabeast, the victim will have the vast majority of his or her traits entirely altered.
Manabeasts need to consume mana, sometimes in any of its forms, sometimes in very specific forms to survive. They can not survive from consuming regular food.

Spell Scar Survivor Manabeast:

A spell scar is a metaphisical wound in a living being's magical essence. Such wounds allow the magical essence and the physical body to interact in a way that is harmful to the physical body, poisoning and deteriorating the living flesh. Creatures who do not possess magical abilities can suffer from spell scars, but such occurrences are exceptionally rare and 99.9% of the time lethal.
If a creature manages to overcome the odds and survive the deteriorating effects of a spell scar, it may turn into a manabeast.
Key differences between a spell-scar survivor manabeast and a mana corruption survivor manabeast are:
  • Spell Scar Manabeasts can still have organic parts of their bodies that did not transform into aer.
  • Spell Scar Manabeasts might retain most, if not all of their features just as they were before the corruption occurred.
  • Spell Scar Manabeasts invariably explode in a violent release of raw energy (mana) upon their death.

Magically adept creatures such as wizards, mages, and most other creatures that have control over magic utilizing a mana pool are highly unlikely to accidentally suffer from mana poisoning or mana corruption. They may suffer mana overflow, which happens when their mana pool is overloaded with more mana than they can contain or control. Almost always, a magic adept will involuntarily and violently expel the excess mana from his body, and will afterwards have the symptoms of severe food poisoning for at least a week.
If a magic adept is incapable of expelling the excess mana, mana poisoning will ensue instantly and violently, with a very low chance of survival. Those who survive become manabeasts.
