NPC Rules

These Rules concern the use of Non-Player Characters (NPCs). Please read carefully and if in doubt, ask a GM or Admin.

-What is a NPC?
The definition in our Glossary of RP Terms states that a non-player character is a character that is controlled by the GMs. NPCs are used as tools to interact with players usually at crucial points of the storyline, or simply to fill in a token role.

-Do I need an NPC?
    Most likely no.

NPC stands for Non-Player Character. They have a range of purposes within the world of Lismore, from the trivial to the grand. They are, however, not normally played by Players. Thus, the name.

In ALL cases, NPCs must be approved by a GM, or an Event Coordinator. It is not permissible for you to play a NPC within Lismore with out this approval. In most cases, approval will not be given. In rare cases such as events, you may be invited to play one. In the case of Trivial NPCs, you may be allowed to assume their actions (see below).

Trivial NPCs:

Trivial NPCs are people like the dock workers, the street sweepers, and various other uniteresting roles that exist within the cities and temples of Lismore. That is not to say a PC (Player Character, or you...) could not play one of these roles, but you would not be the only one. People could always 'assume' these tasks are completed.

Trivial NPCs can only do whatever it is they were defined to do. They can not tell you the news of the day. They can't be fought, or killed (with out GM approval), they won't side with you in an argument. Dockworkers will work the dock. Street sweepers will keep the streets clean. That's it.

Such NPCs must be defined by the GMs.

Some currently defined Trivial NPCs:

Bartender in the Slave's Gift Bar and Inn.
He or she will serve drinks and food in exchange for coin at the bar, clean it up, and stay out of the way. This is to cover for the fact that it is unresaonble OOC to staff the area 24x7 when it should be IC.

Jail Guards in the Lismore Jail.
They guard. They feed and provide water to prisoners. They empty the chamber pot. And that's it. They will not be talked into letting you free, they can't be overpowered, they are not a sympathetic ear.

Event NPCs:

Event NPCs are short-lived (maybe) NPCs that exist for the duration of an event. These are usually played by Lismore Admins, but sometimes the role will be given to a player who shows they can handle such a role, depending on staffing needs. These include random monsters that come out of portals (or wherever) for PCs to clober. They don't have a lot of back story, and they mostly are there to fight or provide hints.

Plot NPCs:

More in-depth NPCs that the GMs have thought out, and are intended to play a more prominant role in the day to day lives of people in Lismore. Examples include: The Gods. Rulers of Cities. The Face (a so far nameless evil that lurks behind the veil of reality). Hight Priests. Etc.

Some of these will be played often so that PCs can interact with them. Others, rarely, just glimpses seen at special moments. Most of them are very powerful beings, and not intended for a single Player to defeat. They just set things in motion.
