What abilities does this race have that makes it unique?: highly selective nose, hearing, and an ability to match the frequency for various materials such as wood, stone, and different kinds of metal. their nose is directly tuned to sniff out very specific things. while the breed of cats were created for mining purposes, it stands to reason that with the proper incentive to the breeder, one can have the cat focused in this area for something other than metal. normally however the sense of smell is so sensitive that it is able to detect the scent of metal ore through several feet of rock. in sim terms this means they can identified any scent within ten feet of them. however, due to this, anything beyond that they effectively can not smell. for reference, the house they are in could be burning. the fire could be above them and everyone else could smell it, but unless a source was within ten feet of them they would be oblivious. their hearing ability has been bread into them for the sake of the miners and the ones working the forge. their ears are able to dull out harsh noises that would normally deafen or leave the ears of others ringing. this helps them use blasting charges in mines, and work the forges with their hammers. if they don't have to be as far away from the blast, they can get back to the dig sight much quicker than their normal counterparts. another ability they have, if one could call it that, is a complete lack of self preservation. this may translate into a lack of common sense, but unless a owner works for several years with them on it, they are unable to comprehend the act of self preservation for themselves or others of their kind, this means a abnormal work ethic that allows them to work until they literally die from it. they will push through hunger, pain, injury, anything that would make other creatures with self preservation stop.
What must a player do to use your race?: keep in mind the lore and history of the race in general and come to the realization that this is not a combat race. they must also purchase and use the avatar. also, this is a race that is not a hybrid race, and can not be bread with other non feline creatures. this was put into place in the breeding program to prevent illegitimate heirs from seizing power. also, there is no chance for mutation here, as anything that doesn't meet the breeding criteria would have been killed on the spot, and to prevent the risk of that happening at a later date to anyone else in the batch, it wasn't just them that would have been killed, the entire batch would have been put to death.
they also have superb dark vision. however any other light above low light not only blinds, but disorients them catastrophically. so severe is the disorientation that the cat looses sense of up, down, and general direction. this isn't a simple "oh i'm lost," this is more of something humans can't comprehend, but in lamens terms, every direction is every direction at the same exact time. so up, is down, left, right, back, forwards, ect. so not only are they blind, but they are also promptly immobile. to counteract this, the forge cats wear protective goggles that lowers the light levels to total darkness. as a little bit extra, the cat's eyes actualy are luminous and tangibly glow. while the lux level isn't drastic, a owner can presumably bring the object they are trying to read to just under the cat's eye and have just enough light to read it.
Is there anything people of this race should all know/do? (Include things like diets here!):forge cats should mostly take after their namesake, in that their purpose is the forge and the mine. they were built for heavy labor intensive tasks, or tasks where a single minded mentality would be helpful or more favorable to a free thinking individual. that is not to say that all forge cats are blacksmiths, whitesmiths, or miners. they are what they were created for. this could mean that if someone lived long enough, they could order a forge cat for alchemy, a cat who was tuned to different alchemical ingredients for example. forge cats are also highly expendable in the large sense of things. throwing the lives of a few hundred of these cats away means next to nothing to the owners most of the time. in lismore that has proven to be not so much the case. forge cats do not have litters, while singularly they have litters of cats, they do not consider this, and are instead breed in batches. a single batch of forge cats is 100. batches are judged at one year of age. if any abnormalities exist in the batch, or anything is wrong with the batch what so ever, the batch, in it's entirety, is slaughtered. the process for which is via a design in their holding chambers. forge cats at this point are kept in a room barely as tall as they are. this room has a grated ceiling and a grated floor. once the batch is judged and if it's deemed that it's imperfect, molten lava is diverted from the processing area to flow into the room via the grates. thus the cats are literally incinerated. the cats are also incapable of thinking of escape, and any sense of free will is immediate grounds for batch termination.
forge cats are also multi lingual, but their main language is German. their second language is dwarven, and their third is common.
forge cats are far from useless or worthless, in fact if a forge cat is noted at having accacptional skill or is piratically useful, it may be owned by someone of worth. these cats are subsequently fought over rather violently i might add. it is not uncommon for dwarfs to kill each other for these cats of notable skill.
a forge cat lives to serve it's owner, to it, that is it's only task, it's only purpose, and it's only reason for existing, to it, everything else is a lie, and they cant even comprehend lies. a forge cat is happy when it is serving it's owner and preforming a given task. as time grows on and the cat learns, the feline may find happiness in other things, but being of use to it's owner is always it's ultimate goal and is really the only thing that will make it happy.
forge cats are not used to affection, it is an alien thing for them. they barely know how to comprehend it in fact. at first, all they know is it triggers their purring, which tells them it's time for work. but as time goes on, they may be able to comprehend affection, but this is distracting for it, as this affection, specifically the affection of their owner or someone their owner permits to give them affection becomes their singular focus in life and everything will go towards getting said affection. if they make anything, it will be to please their owner to the point affection is given. affection for them at this point is the only "good job" that matters. anything else means it was only satisfactory and they did not live up to their owner's expectations.
for a forge cat, failure means death. forge cats do not fear death, they are incapable of it as they lack any self preservation sense. forge cats however will not hesitate to put themselves into harms way if it means the safety of their owners or ones they call "prized slaves". a prized slave is anyone who receives affection from the owner, or seems to be held in high regard.
forge cats are incapable of being free. a free forge cat will wait in the spot they were freed until they starve to death or die of dehydration, as they will actually wait for that person, who's name is "free", or "youare free". given no one is actually named that, they end up dieing. a forge cat who is free, will not allow anyone else to move them, and they are rather good at keeping their ground.
forge cats who have worked in the dwarven mines all come "equipped" with magnetic boots. these heavy boots weigh 30Lbs each, and are extremely magnetic. the boots are to allow the cats to walk on both sides of a metal walk way to increase traffic and productivity. cats with full ore bags will walk on top, while cats with empty ore bags will walk on bottom, upside down.
forge cats most always wear some kind of "foot ware" as without it they essentially have no breaks and tend to slide everywhere they go if they're not on grass or dirt.
forge cats are not dumb, while they may seem retarded, or some may conciser them a savant, they are simply just very focused minded.
a forge cat has a very fragile mental state and it is easy to break them. owners are advised not to give the cat an impossible order. now while the owner is free to send the cat to it's death, they are advised, if they value the cat's service, to not give the cat an order such as "go stand in the corner", when the cat is in a round room and there are no corners. once a cat is broken in this way, the normal manner of dealing with it, is simply putting the cat to death and getting a new one. however outside of the dwarven mines an owner will need to spend time to coax the cat into either accepting another order, or forgetting the impossible order. now this is relatively easy for the owner compared to someone who is authorized to giving the cat an order. in this broken mental state the voice of the owner triggers the cat's breed in primal urge to follow commands of it's owner.
forge cats have several dozen bread in and psychological blocks against mating. one of the only ways to get around this is if the cat is owned by a breeder. the simple notion of being owned by a breeder or someone who intends to breed them, takes these blocks out of the way. that being said, even if the cat is allowed to breed, in hindsight they will have no idea what they are doing and must be educated in such manners. otherwise they'll just stand there dumbfounded going "what does this one do?"
Backstory on race (Optional, but highly recommended): forge cats are the byproduct of dozens of generations of selective breeding. the forge cats originated as the Luna cat before the dwarfs got a hold of them. the dwarfs needed a cheep and easy to maintain slave laybor force to extend their mines as well as preform other tasks. as such, several hundred years have been spent carefully in breeding and creating these cats with a mixture of mundane and arcane methods, neither of which have any concern for anything remotely humane about the process, as results were the only thing that mattered to them.
"now" in the "current age", Forge cats are "produced" in dwarven mines as a efficient and cheep slave labor force. to dwarves, the forge cats are nothing more than a tool that is easily replaced once broken. several breeders keep the dwarfs in fresh supply of these hard working cats, and there is no shortage of bodies where numbers are concerned. outside of dwarven mines, it is exceptionally rare to find a forge cat as most of the time they are considered "damaged goods" by most slavers. this breed is also considered an "exotic" breed despite it's house cat appearance. this is generally due to the care that is needed for them as they have very specific health concerns.
now people own forge cats as they would any other exotic, either to show off or to use it's specific talents. in Rome, a well off postal service may use forge cat's to deliver crates. or in a coal mine, the foreman may use the cat as a sort of ore detector to find the most direct path to the coal they search for. a bank in Switzerland may also use the cat to detect counterfeit coins either by scent or the harmonics of the metal. a mint may also use the cat to forge better quality coins, thus improving the worth of the coins.
Culture/Typical behavior (Optional): extremely submissive and obedient. highly dedicated to the owner. somewhat self destructive.
