Lismore Music by Tenaar
« on: July 29, 2011, 03:16:37 am »
Edit 11/10/13: None if this is really relevant anymore. I'm posting all my music here: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/tenaar/

Hey guys! Thought I'd let you know, I'm converting this thread into my own compilation of Lismore-related music.

Most of what you're going to hear will be made with a symphonic orchestra (digital though, using an assortment of Virtual Studio Technology instruments--or VSTi.)

Note about character themes: For you Lismorians I will do character themes upon request for free. Just keep in mind that making music is a difficult and lengthy process that can take anywhere between a full day to finish, up to several months.

My average working window is 3-7 weeks (2 months if RL is busy). Patience is a virtue! As this is something I do for free it is not a priority and will be pushed back if something else demands my attention.

All of the following works, including free character themes are released under a CC BY-NC-SA License ( http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/ ).

I am likely to waive some (or all) of these restrictions for you if you ask me, and it'll be case-by-case. Only my free works are licensed this way.

So I finally finished what I promised I'd make in the event topic from the old forums about the Balrog & that fight (which was never copied over here :<). I didn't quite know where else to put it now, but oh well...

Here's a link: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6210521

I'm not entirely happy with it, but I think it came out pretty good considering that the particular feel I was looking for took me a little out of my element.

Also, check out Ani's thread: http://sculptyworks.com/lismore/index.php?topic=77.msg359#msg359

He makes awesome music too!

That is pretty nice! And epic, no doubt.  :)

The only thing I think is a bit on the down side is the rapid little flutters here and there (specially at the very beginning) that give it too much of a videogame score tone. It doesn't seem serious. But as it progresses, it gets more sober, not so much Zelda-ish.  ;)

So yeah, good work, though! Keep making these. Maybe Ash will get a theme song someday too.  ;)

Heh, alright, Tenaar, I am going to have to be a hard-arse here.  I can't resist, because I critique on FA for anything that's worth my time.  An attribute that has made me a lot of friends.

The music you did, as I heard, is nice.  But a base, i don't know if it really fits as a full song.  It gives a bit of a calm, everyday situation kinda feel, with a couple sparks.  But the situation with the balrog was a BATTLE.  The balrog, a monstrous being taking on a number of powerful men in Lismore.  A slow lead up, arc it up to some strong, powerful tunes, heavy base, strong strings, perhaps.  dunno if brass has any place, save for trumpets.  But the idea is lead it up to something loud, strong, commanding.  This gives the hight of battle feel, perhaps with strong flutes and violin for when Ashtyn showed up, like a battle of a powerful dark force, and a powerful good side.  battle of the greats of both sides.  You died down around the 2 minute mark, right when you where on the right track, which is normally the last minute you want, as the battle has subsided, and the sorrow of their fallen allies sets in.  Then you picked back up around the 3 minute mark, which makes it feel like a time laps between two separate battles.  You did pick up, but not at the exact fitting intervals.  It makes it feel more like a soundtrack for overlooking a world like if you where to show all of Lismore between the peace and the battles, strife and serinity, more so than it showed one specific battle.  At least, that's how it felt to me.

I'd say up till the pickup again at the 3 minute mark, very well executed.  I think you just draged it out a little much. which wuold explain where it felt off.  It was very well composed, and I applaud you.  As a once member of a high school orchestra, I like to see this style of music.  It takes me back to my days with the school, where I bounced between Violin and Trombone.  Gave a nice feel to hear that kind of music has not be lost.  That there are still those who value that beautiful sound.

but for another shot, if you try something like this again, Try not to drag it out.  sometimes shorter is better.  And have the lead up, the arc of the power in the sound, to symbolize the height of the battle, then let it die down, and complete with the soft, yet sorrowful tone of the wounded, the lost, or the defeat.

Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but i just feel it didn't quite give the right feel for what it was supposed to be.  But, I also may be missing some of what happened before i became aware there was something going on, so I may be missing an entire chapter of this tale.  to which point, my entire reasoning is mute.   But if what I was aware of was the whole ordeal, then it's constructive criticism.  and I hope you take such well.  Very well done, just think it could use a little more work.

Late response is late x_x

Thanks for listening <3

Yeah I can agree that it sounds a bit videogame-ish, one of my main sources of inspiration tends to be Final Fantasy scores more than anything but some other gaming scores too like WoW, Zelda (as you mentioned), Section 8, etc.

I'm definitely going to go back to that piece of music & rework it in the future. It was fun to write & I bet it'll be more fun to improve it later on.

This is fantastic feedback <3

I agree, particularly about the description of it giving a bit of a "calm, everyday situation feel with a couple of sparks", which is one of the reasons I intend to come back to the score in the future. It's "epic", but not very battle-esque.
I concentrated too much on the melodious aspect of the score and the cinematic "oh shit we're in trouble" kind-of feeling I was going for suffered because of that.

I don't intend to repeat that mistake next time.

I somewhat agree here. Dying down for a minute and then pick up again was intentional. I tried to pause from the pounding music to build a somewhat more dramatic feeling when Xian received that fatal blow.

At 02:35 Ashtyn shows up & things escalate from there.

At 03:35 I was dying down again for a sort of "slow-motion" battle feel (imagine if Ashtyn vs the Balrog were a movie).

At 04:07 the Balrog's fled, Xian says his last words, etc. until the end.

I'm not brilliant with cinematic music just yet, I'll admit. There's a lot of work that's needed here, particularly in improving/mending what you've mentioned.
