Title: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Ashtyn on December 21, 2014, 05:21:18 am
So here's a silly thing I thought up: Every day I'll ask a random question here, and if people feel like answering, go ahead and answer, if not, oh well! Let's see if this works, or if it flops!

And our random question of the day is.......

...do you clip your nails, or do you chew them?
(or just let them grow wild and wear them out digging holes on the ground?)

I'm a chewer. Started as a nervous habit when I was little, never been able to kick it.

I'm a clipper, I only bite one off when I really need to.

A bit of both, I would say. Occasionally I have a day where I take care of some issues like clipping nails. But whenever the lenght of a nail bugs me, or it is uneven because part of it ripped away somehow, then I don't hesitate to use my fangs and correct the issue on the spot, chewing the offensive bits away. ;)

I nibble.. but only when feeling stressed or anxious. Given my job.. that is every workday, sadly!

I'm a clipper, spent many years as a chewer but one day decided I needed to stop, used some of that bitter stuff you spray on dog's to keep em from licking worked realy well after a while.

As for myself, I clip! Never got the hang of chewing them, I can't stand the jagged edges that leaves.

Who would win a fight between Batman and Wonder Woman?
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Jiala Aeon on December 21, 2014, 09:39:22 pm
Actually if I remember right, Batman and Wonder Woman did go round and round in an official comic, and batman did win. There was a comic series where batman was forced to take down the Justice League by himself, he even managed to beat superman. It took months of planning and preparing though.

Without any time to prepare for it, Wonder Woman would probably beat him as skilled as he is, he'd have no way to counter her super strength or powers in his normal day to day crime fighting kit. If he had time to prepare, he'd win, as he knows her powers and weaknesses. He keeps exhaustive records on each of his allies in case hes ever has to fight them.

That was Batman's real strength, he was a detective. He had the information and resources.

Post by: Novaku on December 21, 2014, 10:14:40 pm
^ Pretty much all Jiala said.

Batman wins hands down cause he has back up plans for his back up plans and has a plan for each and every member of the Justice League.

Really should watch the Tower of Babel animated movie, it's based on the comics where Batman took down the JLA
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Lycanthrope on December 21, 2014, 11:48:30 pm
Batman has the greatest superpower, nigh unlimited resources and and an unmatched mind, if he's expecting it he can beat anyone and anything

If Wonder Woman just randomly attacks him unexpected, depends on how the opening seconds go, wonder woman wins if she makes a killing or crippling blow early on, batman wins if he survives long enough.

In the end it comes down to time preplaning and wether or not things start out as lethal combat.

Batman will win just about every fight because of the reasons above. He has resources and information, if memory serves me he even beat superman once.

Do you get Christmas presents on Christmas Eve, or Christmas morning?
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Jiala Aeon on December 22, 2014, 07:10:01 pm
Our family always did it so that you got to open one small gift on christmas eve, the rest waited till morning.
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Novaku on December 22, 2014, 07:14:28 pm
We don't celebrate Christmas like that, though it is a custom that starts to become more common here, especially with families who's children have already become adolescents.

The reason why many generally don't celebrate Christmas with gifts here, is because of Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas in Dutch) whom died on December 6th, so on the eve of the 5th, gifts are shared (Children find them in the morning, much like Christmas). Basically said, he is our version of Santa Claus and there's plenty of comparisons there too, but funnily enough, we're celebrating the death of a holy man :P

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinterklaas

Funnily enough, the American Santa Claus, is based on the Dutch Sinterklaas.

"The modern figure of Santa Claus is derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, whose name is a dialectal pronunciation of Saint Nicholas, the historical Greek bishop and gift-giver of Myra. During the Christianization of Germanic Europe, this figure may have absorbed elements of the god Odin, who was associated with the Germanic pagan midwinter event of Yule and led the Wild Hunt, a ghostly procession through the sky."

So.....hah! Copycats! We did it before it was cool and corporatized by Coca Cola!
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Tenaar Feiri on December 22, 2014, 07:47:53 pm
Us Norsemen don't even celebrate Christmas because of either America or the Dutch!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomte

In fact, Swedish Jenny Nyström created the appearance of Santa Claus as we know him today based on the Tomte folklore of Scandinavia & a painting of Father Christmas (specifically this one: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/FatherChristmastrial.jpg ).
Moreover, Father Christmas did in fact not give presents to children, he was a symbol for adult celebration, bringing news of Christ's birth to the world & encouraging people to eat and drink.
Father Christmas became the precursor for Santa Claus when puritanism emerged & they needed to give him a friendlier, cheerier appearance of venerable, kindly old gentleman given to cheer but not excess. Indeed, the Americans then proceeded to rip off the Dutch Sinterklaas later on as a gift-giver, but Sinterklaas was not technically Santa Claus' precursor!
That was the tomte and the puritanized Father Christmas!

The more you know...!

Incidentally, I don't wait with opening presents unless made to wait =P I don't have the time nor motivation to sit with something on my shelf for that long & not knowing what it is.

Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Ausar on December 23, 2014, 02:30:05 am
On the 24th I visit my family early in the morning. We have breakfast together and then go about the preparations, usually with my father and I setting up and decorating the tree, while my mother and brother are busy in the kitchen to make sure we will have a nice meal later on. Once we are finished with everything, we take a walk together and then spend the rest of the afternoon and evening playing card or board games, singing carols and reading stories.

We keep doing that till midnight, when one of us will read the Christmas gospel. Usually it is after that when we unwrap our presents.
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Ashtyn on December 23, 2014, 04:33:29 am
Christmas back in Brazil used to be that we'd get the presents on after midnight from 24th to 25th, and then on the 25th was just Christmas meal and such.

Here in The U.S. while I lived in Tennessee it really didn't matter, the only 'tradition' was to go for Christmas lunch with my ex's parents on the 25ht; but where I live now in Virginia, Tye's family has Christmas traditions! We get a small gift at midnight, then I'm dragged out of bed at 6am on the 25th to open presents, then everybody goes back to sleep and in the afternoon there's Christmas lunch with Tye's relatives.

This year is likely going to be really.... strange, since Tye's father died a few months ago. They are holding up alright but I know Christmas itself is going to be tough on them since he was intrinsic part of their tradition routine.

And continuing on the xmas spirit....
Would you have your kids believe in the whole Santa Claus thing, or just tell them straight-up where the gifts come from?
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Lycanthrope on December 23, 2014, 05:00:27 pm
I'd keep it up as long as they belived or at least played along convincingly. I loved the whole santa thing, even when I started to suspect it wasnt real the simple fantasy was always enjoyable.
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Ausar on December 23, 2014, 05:09:02 pm
"Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus."

Few things are as wonderful as the fantasy of a child. I would try to create wonderful moments for them for as long as I can. I already played St. Nicholas at a kindergarten my cousin works at myself. Also, I still like to think of myself or the other parents setting up the event for children as Santa's little helpers. Santa Claus is an idea and that idea is very much alive. Everyone of us can be part of him and add to the legend.
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Radem on December 24, 2014, 03:19:46 am
Depends completely on the child in question.

If I had to pick yes or no I'd pick yes. I still remember everything about the moment I figured it all out. Where I was, what everything looked like, all the sounds. It's something of a coming of age ritual, and even if it's not entirely pleasant, it was still an important life lesson, and one that can be made positive - learning one form of magic is less real than we might hope, so we have to make other kinds.
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Husky Dragon on December 24, 2014, 09:21:15 am
I think it's good to encourage kids to believe in fantasy and magic at an early age, as long as it's not allowed to go too far. I very much think part of my love of roleplay and maybe a lot of other parts of who I am today are because I was allowed to explore myth and fantasy as if it were real.

And even now, really, it's fun to let myself believe in superstition now and then. We visited a ghost town in northern nevada a couple years ago, I can't say it would've been anywhere near as fun if I hadn't let part of myself believe it actually was haunted!

One more on the xmas spirit....
Do you prefer a natural tree or an artificial tree (or no tree at all)?
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Novaku on December 24, 2014, 11:52:12 pm
Natural.

I haven't had a three in a while now, but...call me nostalgic, Christmas Trees need to be natural...the scent of them adds in to the mood of it all
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day

We always tend to have a fake tree or two up, but since there's three cats and two inquisitive dogs in the house, i would personally prefer to have neither
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Tenaar Feiri on December 25, 2014, 12:58:39 am
Artificial ones.

Having to clean up after the natural ones is a f-ing chore. And with artificial ones, you only really need to decorate the tree ones. Then just stuff it with decorations in a garbage bag until next year, and then you have a fully decorated tree in 3 minutes next year!

I put up my grandmothers wrought iron tree, its realy more of a very large ornament hangar, but it looks realy nice and doesnt make a mess, we didnt put it up this year because theres a LOT of family staying at my place and theres no room inside
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Ausar on December 25, 2014, 04:04:12 am
A real, natural tree. Yes, it is more work, but it also is a lot more special, meaningful and unique. It Is never the same, it is never 'perfect' (my biggest beef with the fake trees), it is always a tree with it's own character and when my family sets it up and starts to decorate  we all have to work with what we are given, play to the individual tree's strengths and weaknesses. :)

Let me also emphasize Nova's point: The scent of a real tree. For me, scents trigger memories and emotions. It is why I love to put up incense as well. Here in Germany we have traditional wodden incense holders shaped like little humans with a pipe or little houses with chimneys that we use during Christmas time to burn incense, flooding our homes with the scents of pine, fir, opium and many more.

Attached a picture of some we have here.

Where I came from in Brazil, and I think Brazil in general, New Year is the second biggest thing they celebrate (second to Carnival, and... whatever dumb sporting event is going on at the time). It's bigger than 4th of July in the US, with fireworks galore, and it's party everywhere! It's quite a contrast to what it is here, where it's only "yeah happy new year, now let's carry on with our lives" (there are fireworks and stuff but it's nothing compared to what it's like in Brazil.

Speaking in general it would be Ice Cold Milk or Hot Cocoa. In the field of sodas and energy drinks it is a tight battle between Mountain Dew and Monster Energy. And when it comes to alcoholic beverages it would be a good whisk(e)y. Depending on my mood either something mild from Ireland like Bushmills or a richly flavored Scotch Whisky like Laphroaig. :)

Used to have one during my childhood and youth, the one that I never deconstructed and kept around was a weekend villa my grandmother gave me for a christmas present. These days I think parts of my lego collection went to young cousins, the rest should be somewhere on my parents attic or collecting dust in their garage. And of course, if you got Lego in your home you are prone to step on a brick at least once or twice. ;)

Ehh... hard to say. Grew up with cats and dogs together under the same roof... but I'm more of a cat person I guess. Most cats just seem to get along with me. Even skiddish ones who hate and claw everybody. So probably a kitten, and I raise it to be a little snuggle kitty.

Fennec would be unknown territory for me. I'd have to do a bunch of research and make sure I was doing the absolute best I could provide for it nutritional wise and how to train it to go outside and/or paper train... lets face it, dogs are easy to train, cats are just shy of impossible. Fennecs? I have no idea where they land on the scale for training.

Definitely winter. Deep winter. Everything is quiet, sleeping. The chill wind excites me, energizes me, drives me to explore nature. The bugs aren't bugging. Most people stay inside instead of wandering about, leaving me alone outdoors to explore at my own pace through the forest and parks. Sounds carry father through the freezing air with an eerie quality. Ice covers everything with a beautiful crystalline majesty. When it snows, Suddenly everything is blank, white, quiet, pure, covering the trash, the houses, the streets, the sidewalks, nature claiming itself back, if only for a few days. I see white featureless expanses with no footprints. I am alone without signs of other people. Winter is my favorite season. Winter is peace.

All but Spring.

Summer has long twilight and mild evenings, great for doing outdoor stuff or just sitting fireside with friends.

Fall, now that I'm no longer a wee bunny and equate Fall with another crappy year of school, is beautiful in its own way. Turning leaves, brisk winds, county fairs.

Winter can have fluffy snow and the sports that go along, crisp cold nights where the sky seems clearer than it does any other time of year. It's also got people just winding down a bit at the end of the year, and that's nice.

Spring for me sadly I find lacking - while it heralds the end of winter (which by March I'm pretty sick of), it always reminds me of gritty slushy roads and Mother Nature teasing us with a spring thaw and then a surprise snowstorm.

If I had to pick one? Probably Fall. Summer's great, but too often it results in having to hide in air conditioning.

I love all kinds of meat and it is hard to fairly bring them into anything resembling a list of favorites, because like with many other things different meats hit my tastes and cravings according to my mood in different situations. If done well, birds like ducks and goose can be wonderful treats, the former one being an all time favorite among Asian food I like to order. Beef stands out for the wonderful steaks I like to enjoy either medium or English (I love it when the meat retains some of it's very original flavor, not being totally cooked). And don't get me started on how finger-licking good pork can be if you go about it the old fashioned way... roasting pork over an open fire is key. You need to taste a hint of smoke on the meat to really make it an experience.

What I often dislike is when meat is too dry. I usually prefer it juicy.

Fish, while technically certainly a meat of its own, isn't something I think of when someone asks me about meat. I like fish, though probably to a lesser intent than Arynkitty. Having to deal with fishbone usually bugs me because us big bad wolves have a tendency to be greedy and not a be all that patient checking every bit of the fish again and again - I think this is mostly what makes fish less interesting to me. But as for favorites among fish... this would be Pangasius (a kind of catfish), Plaice and Zander.

...I actually never cared for meats in general. It's not vegetarianism or some other thing like that, I just have no particularly strong desire to eat meat. And I refuse to eat anything that resembles the animal it was while alive, so no roasted pigs on a spit or stuff like that for me.

But when I do eat meat, I'm the definition of 'picky eater'. On birds I only eat the breast and since I don't like bird meat in general I rarely eat it. Red meat the only one I can say I truly enjoy is filet mignon and it better be done damn well right! I've tried things from frogs to squirrel to pigeons and find them all disgusting. I had both horse and donkey in Europe and I have to say the donkey salami was quite something, I wouldn't mind having some more of that! I don't like pork, but I will have some BBQ ribs or some pulled pork sandwich so long as the sauces are potent enough that I can barely taste the meat itself. And I will. Not. Eat. Organ meat; with me it's muscle or nothing. And it all better be lean meat, because fat is disgusting! And well-done; I don't like the taste of blood!

But I like beef jerky, from beef, deer, and alligator, they are delicious!

I like most seafood, though: Swordfish, salmon, and tuna, in that order, are my favorites. Crab/lobster is Ok but I have no special feelings for it. And while I will eat shrimp, I find it overrated, and rarely have any.

With Germany pretty much sitting in the middle of Europe, I've spend most my time visiting our various neighbors. Traveled to the Netherlands, Belgium, France, England, Austria etc. I think the longest road trip I had was when we were visiting the County of Kladsko in Poland. That area used to be a part of Germany before the outcome of the second world war and it is where my relatives on my father's side are from. His parents had a farm there with my grandpa raising horses. The farm actually still stands (or stood when I last was there) and the people living there today where nice enough to allow us a short walk over the grounds and taking some pictures.

Distance wise it wasn't that much, the longest individual trip probably just scratching the mark of around 800km or 500 miles. But I got a pretty nice view of what surrounds me.

Cell phones? Uhm.... that's those annoying little things everyone seems to carry around today and pull out whenever the attention briefly shifts to someone else? :D

Ahem, yeah, you can probably guess how much I love them. So... I have one but only because it sometimes really is convenient to be able to call someone when you are traveling, or be contacted. I get my mobile handed down from Athian usually. So my answer is: Never or only very very rarely ^^
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Ausar on January 04, 2015, 05:47:37 am
I am a creature of habit. Once I've grown to like a cellphone I usually tend to stick with it until one of three things happens:

1.)  The damn thing breaks (either material fatigue or some accident, like falling down from great heights or Lord Athian sitting down on it).

2.) The damn thing is so outdated that it doesn't work properly anymore (damn those smartphones and the people who created them with not enough internal memory - and shame on Google for bloating up their apps more and more, usually while cutting down on the usability at the same time)

3.) Arynkitty needs a new phone so that he can give me a call when he needs food, cuddles or a lift. ;)

Usually one of those things happens at least once every 2-3 years. ^_^

Post by: Tenaar Feiri on January 04, 2015, 07:42:19 am
Last smartphone I had lasted for about 5 years before I replaced it.

Before then, I was using an old tiny but sturdy phone from the 1998, one of those anti-impact ones that are able to withstand being driven over by a semi-trailer.

Remember the days when our technological stuff could withstand the weight of a semi-trailer?
Those were the days!

So yeah, before I got my smartphone, I'd had my old cellphone for 11 years!

I like many fruits, especially in the winter season for that boost of vitamins and during summer to enhance my cocktails. If I had to pick a favorite fruit I would probably go for bananas. I really dig the taste and I like the texture of the fruit and the many things you can use it for. I know a recipe for a delicious banana cake, banana milk is simply yummy in my mind and those roasted and sweet flavored bananas in Asian cuisine are something else, too.

Also one has to give nature bonus points for the shape.

That is really hard to answer because my computer is a work-in-progress. I rarely start fresh entirely, instead usually I update it by replacing parts. Granted, the biggest change usually comes around when I need a new motherboard, because most of the time the CPU and RAM needs to be changed alongside with that.

The newest part would be a new hard disk from Christmas. So yeah, you can put me in the Frankenputer category, too. :)

No, YCH's tend to be auctions which usually start at 20 and go up 5 bucks with each bit, you'll be outbid before you know it and by the time you want to place a second bid it's well up over your price range.
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Ausar on January 09, 2015, 03:24:41 am
No, not yet. If I had the spare money for it I might consider it. But usually I prefer to set the theme of a painting myself, so it would be a lucky find to get one that works for me.

And it probably would have to be one with only one spot to insert a character - or one where I know ahead of my decision who is going to pick up the other ones. Wouldn't want to end up with random people, because as much as I love the diversity that comes with the furry fandom, there is also a good chance the depicted chars end up being something I don't particularly enjoy - especially if the art shows us interacting in some way.

Underwear every day! ...until late afternoon if I'm not expecting I'll be wearing them, or going out of the house.

In fact, in the late afternoons I don't really wear anything if I can help it. I cover up all the windows (since I live right next to a street and people can look in =P) and just chill in my birthday suit.
It's actually very relaxing and liberating!

Previous question: Personally I'd rather go full nude then go commando under normal clothing. So when I do wear clothes, I usually wear underwear below. But it could be underwear worth uncovering in some cases. ;)

I am not good at high speeds, I think the fastest I went in a car that I drove myself was around 140km/h. I assume I was travelling at Warp 5 in a car once, though. At least it felt that way and I've never quite been the same after riding with that particular driver.

Roses - I really love the variety of roses that exist, in both shape and color. And I like that it is a flower that comes with thorns, making it a good example to never just judge by looks alone.

@Nova: Thing is, I kinda like the European hornet, which is the natural motherfucking enemy of the wasp, eating them. ;)

Not really following the show enough to honestly claim a favorite, but I like it whenever they mix in some actual male ponies. If I have to name one anyway, I'd probably go for Bulk Biceps, because he was one where they actually had to do a unique character model instead of just a different color scheme. ;)

By hand? probably not since highschool if I'm being honest. A good 13 years now. I prefer to type because unfortunately my handwriting looks like chickenscratch at best. And using a word processor allows me to correct my spelling errors easily. People complain constantly that they can't read my handwriting. Hrm... no there was one college paper I had to write by hand cause the professor insisted on it. Unfortunately I got a fairly low grade on it unfortunately cause my professor had difficulty reading it. But that was still about ... 11 years ago now? I still write my grocery lists by hand cause thats easier for me to remember, and cheaper to replace if I accidently misplace a notpad.

Handwriting: Frequently writing up some stuff or brainstorming for the Pen&Paper RPG sessions. While a lot of the material will find its way into Word documents at some point, the planning state still happens with nothing but a pencil and some paper, especially since I can use them almost everywhere I want. So the last time would be last week while preparing for the RP.

Socks: When I am wearing shoes I wear socks (unless it is sandals). But when I can get away with it and it is not cold or anything I like to stay barefooted within the house.

Hard one, I usually have more than one movie that comes to my mind, because they all serve different moods and situations - like if I want something deep and meaningful or just some popcorn action movie. ;)

But here are three of my favorites that came to mind:

- Wonder Boys: Wonderful movie from 2000 with Michael Douglas as a writer unable to finish his second novel (after the huge success of his first one). Liked it very much because it had a firm grasp on the special kind of people who are artists as well as on the creative process.

- LoveActually: Great portmanteau film over the holiday season (Christmas/New Year) that proves it's premise that love is actually all around.

- Drei Nüsse für Aschenbrödel: In my opinion still the best movie take ever on the Cinderella fairy tale. It is an old fairy-tale film from 1973, co-produced by Czechoslovakia and East Germany. The title translates to 'Three Nuts for Cinderella', though I've heard it was published under the English titles of 'Three Gifts for Cinderella' and 'Three Wishes for Cinderella'. This movie has gorgeous costumes and landscapes and Cinderella is a rather strong woman, very unlike your run-of-the-mill damsel in distress that most Disney princesses have been for many years. I don't know how the English dubbed versions hold up, but the movie is regarded a classic in many European countries and again is traditionally on the air during the holiday season. If you still like fairy tales even outside of animated movies, this is one gem you should look at.
I've heard the Czech film archive is currently working on a digital restoration of the movie, thanks to funding from Norway. With some luck we will see the film in even better quality this year's holiday season (if they make it on time).

Post by: Ausar on February 01, 2015, 10:45:49 pm
Worst smell I personally experienced? I think that was while I helped out at geriatric care and we came upon a patient that had little to no control left over bodily functions and thus had to wear diapers. He wasn't doing well those days and suffered from diarrhea in addition to the usual symptoms. Usually the smell of human excrements doesn't bother me overly much, but in this case it was an unbearably sweet, yet foul pungent odor.
I kinda suspect the medication had a hand in altering the smell.

From what I heard, but haven't experienced yet, I believe some fermented fish stuff is worse, though.

Do you like ceiling fans or are they a nuisance?
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Ausar on February 05, 2015, 12:36:21 am
Ceiling fans in general are a great thing if you have a place that allows for them. Nothing like getting a breeze from them on a hot summer's day. From the point of aesthetics you usually need a large enough room and furniture spread out in a pattern that aligns with the fan. I also like it when ceiling fans double as your light source.

If they work as they should, I have no problem with them. They can, however, turn into a nuisance if they make too much or the wrong kind of noise. But that is an issue of quality and maintenance, rather than an inherent problem with ceiling fans.

I actually despise ceiling fans. ...or any fan near me. For some reason nobody can explain, fans blow away ALL my body heat, leaving me feeling cold and miserable. I love a natural breeze, but artificially moving air wrecks me!

(my friends used to joke that if I were a supervillain, the unusual exotic "only way to defeat me" would be to aim a fan at me  ;)  )

Cars, much more comfy and you can transport a lot of stuff (and Aryn can tell you that I need way to much stuff whenever I travel, even if only for a weekend visit).

I don't mind the bicycle for short distances, especially since you have an easier time finding a parking space for them - but in fall and winter they are not much fun to use. Cold, wet and prone to get you in trouble if the ground is slippery due to wet fallen leaves or ice.

Something close to it. I once dreamed of something vaguely like a zombie apocalypse in the neighborhood where I grew up; I don't know if it was black and white, or just "dark".

It was one of the more unpleasant dreams I've ever had. It was very realistic, very visceral, and utterly terrifying in a cold sort of way.

@Black&White Dreaming:  Colors set the mood and occasionally play an important role in my dreams. I've had dream settings where it was mostly shadows or even true black-and-white, though sometimes this is deliberately so to recreate an environment from an old movie or television show that I continue or expand on in my mind.

@show marathons: With shows that I like I occasionally marathon whole seasons by myself. But there is also some shows I watch together with friends and that usually means that we get together and watch a couple of episodes every other week.

@Disney movies: Both 'The Lion King' and 'The Emperor's New Groove'. The former is what I refer to as the classical Disney movie, while the latter has many delightful breakings of the fourth wall and Disney actually spends some time reflecting about common tropes of their movies.

What is your favorite Disney movie?

...I actually stumped myself with this one, there are so many Disney movies that I absolutely love!

I watched The Lion King some 2573 times, but I can't really say it's my favorite.
I absolutely love The Beauty and the Beast.... but I can't really say it's my all-time favorite (and it makes me cry).
Lilo & Stitch is brilliant, but... not favorite (and it also makes me cry).
The Little Mermaid is really damn good too... Uuhmmm...
Aladdin is up there as favorite.... but not quite The favorite...
I think I'm gonna go with Tangled. I love love love that movie! ...Uhm... No... The Beauty and the Beast... Uuhm... Tangled... Aladdin... Argh I can't decide! Let's go with all of the above!

What was your biggest noob moment in SL?
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Ausar on February 23, 2015, 08:46:41 pm
I can use SL as a player, but I have no skill or knowledge at working with the many tools for editing and creating content. So whenever I face seemingly simply situations, like minor work on the avatar, I am full of questions.

Remove the script from the bracers! How do I do that? Attach that tail to the other! How do I do that?

It is easy to feel very much like a noob in those moments. ;)

I personally never had much issues with the whole modding/building aspect.....no, my biggest noob moment was that of most furries. Running around with a freebie AV, nekkid and without an AO.

My biggest noob moment was a very long time ago when I had first joined SL...
...you see, I was unaware that you could fly. SoOooo, whenever I wanted to go 'up' to a skybox, I would rez a prim, hop onto it, rez another one within hopping distance, jump on it, move the previous prim up some, jump on it, move the other prim up, jump on it... on and on and on, like an inchworm making my way up into the sky step-by-step!  ;)

Too many to just pick one... here are a few examples:

Adding a small stone that is shaped and/or colored in a way I like to my collection.

The look on Arynkitty's face when he wakes up on a good morning.

The smell of rain on a warm day.

Putting a genuine, good natured smile on someone's face who was in a bad mood before.

Watching cuddly little pups at play.

The sensation of being in the right place at the right time.

Many things come to mind. Convincing child characters, great rhetoricians (while still maintaining a pace that doesn't put your follow players to sleep) or someone deeply spiritual without ending up in cliché. But if I had to pick one, I'd say I go for building trust.

Having build some real, meaningful trust of your avatar in the character of someone else and being rewarded with that same level of trust in return. It is something that is often futile due to the nature of the medium, with players not seeing each other every day (or at the very least not maintaining the same characters as often as they are online for Lismore RP). Character relations are often erratic, more befitting any present scenario's needs than what was slowly build up in the days, weeks or months before. Establishing that against the odds and maintaining it throughout what events or scenes are thrown your way would make me one proud and happy wolf indeed.

@ShaRroos:  No commenting unless you offer us your reply as well. ;)

Can't agree with this more honestly, in fact I would dare say that RPing on SL has simplified my style because of a certain lack of descriptions needed which is a whole lot different from how I used to RP when it was purely text based.

Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Ausar on May 05, 2015, 04:48:55 pm
Living... hmm, does Mishra count? Despite often trying to reign that one in IC, I have fond memories of some scenes with that obnoxious cat. The odd fellow usually abusive in language and action, he still could add to scenes with his knowledge about Lismore's past and his sometime unique view on situations.
I have other potential living candidates in mind, but I suspect they are still in the closet and not necessarily regarded villains, yet. I don't want to spoil learning about them.

As for the dear departed, or those at least presumed dead, while Hazel probably is the man still talked the most about, I personally never met the man. So of those my character actually met... I guess Fang made an impression, less for the actual acts of madness, but for the quiet moments, those when a normal, feeling, maybe even hurt women was shining through. I remember a very eerie scene in the granary, where she was moved by something she saw and started to reminisce about her past. Giving a villain these kind of human moments makes their impact much stronger.
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Ashtyn on May 05, 2015, 07:31:31 pm
Hehe, having played or helped with many villains, it's kind of odd to pick one from the bunch. Hazel was actually my favorite to play because it was a challenge to get him to do villainous things and still get away with it.

Way back in the day when the Zenko was still its own separate thing and all three (four) factions basically regarded eachother as independent sovereign nations, I remember a scene where Hazel showed up at the tea house while Xian was there. Xian was captain of the guard or something else important like that in the city, but had no jurisdiction whatsoever in the Zenko. The city wanted Hazel for questioning or something, and there he was, and there was nothing they could do. Was a very entertaining and intense scene between Nova and I, almost like an exciting game of chess!  ;)

But I'm going to list my favorite as The Face. That was the very first actual big bad villain we had, and it came about merely by accident. But when it happened suddenly everybody was curious about it! The enemy had a name, and it was a bit of a mystery too! In those early days of The Face, it was a very good villain!

...now I can't list any of the living villains, or I'll blow their cover!  ;)
(and sure Mishra counts as a bad guy of sorts!)
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day

Gnarl and the hyena's, only villians that ever really worked to creat a true sense of dread in the RP.
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Novaku on May 06, 2015, 11:10:27 am
Dead? Hmm, player wise I would have to agree with Lyle here, Gnarl's trio of hyena's way back in old Lismore was a prime example of a player driven event that practically involved the whole sim, it also involves Xian's first shining moments when he was barely enlisted into the Guard, Gnarl himself can be an ass sometimes, but that was definitely one of his finer moments.

Staff wise...I'd have to give it to Ash with his Balrog, again because of personal involvement and experience. Xian's "Final" battle was an epic one going from him facing the Balrog on his own, to being joined and aided by various players from Lismore, all up into an emotional dying scene and quote. Now I know the Balrog isn't exactly dead, the final battle having send him and Ashtyn into somewhere far beyond, but those fights against that beast were quite enjoyable.

Hazel of course gets a mention, like Ash said, we had this grand scene at Zenko that was both a staring contest and a game of chess. I would dare say that Hazel was sort of a rival of Xian, both in the political games and otherwise. Matters became worse when Xian got sick of the game with Hazel and eventually assaulted him within the caves resulting into a fight that ended up with Xian being comatose for a while, those were good times.

Living...I'd have to say Collie honestly, the devious pirate, the man that brought Lismore into war several times and was a key player during both Great Wars.
Title: Re: Random Question of the Day
Post by: Radem on May 06, 2015, 04:12:47 pm
For me personally, it was Hazel, since I had some terrific scenes between him and Radem.

Gnarl and his fleet of miscreants certainly had a lot of impact for tirelessly harassing the players night after night. Some good stuff, but it frequently went too far in terms of "Welp, you were trying to have a nice RP, but now you have to deal with this instead." He seemed to be getting better about it, but then disappeared.

The balrog was cool, but sadly I have some bad memories surrounding the climax event in particular, so he doesn't make the list.

For the last question: My favourite badguy is Kami. She's not bad these days but started off as it, and was one of my first experiences with the flexibility and adapting that can happen during some events based on player actions :3

In general I liked the Face threat, it lead to huge developments of Xela's character (And ultimately her death)!
Collie comes a close second! I still remember the first time Xela met him, her first death in her undeath. She was not impressed and has had a vendetta against him ever since~

I suppose my favorite villains would be collie, Fangshi, and the ones who captured Relina the first time, which left her with a scar in her memory to this day. Most notably, i would have to say would be the face and the desert faction. They presented a constant threat, though not being able to do much about captured allies until a certain time was a bit of a drag, i enjoyed those times.
